Diagnostic Efficacy of Chest CT Scan in Bulla Detection of Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Abstract
Spontaneous pneumothorax is caused by rupture of the subpleural bleb especially in lung apex and more frequent in young male patient Because of the tendency of bullous lesions of the lung to be bilateral, spontaneous pneumothorax on one side
often
recurs on the opposite side. Exact detection of bilateral bullae using the chest CT scan and simultaneous bilateral bullous resection for unilateral spontaneous pneumothorax through median sternotomy can be possible to prevent recurrent
pneumothorax. We
performed chest CT scans with 5mm thin section in 27 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax. Total cases show bullae in chest CT scan and 13 cases among them underwent median sternotomy. Surgically matched bullae with chest CT scan are 10 cases. So
the
accuracy of CT scan was 76.9% 6 cases of unilateral bullectomy also show matched findings with chest CT scan, Bulla detection of chest CT scan is found to be very sensitive and relative accurate. Therefore preoperative chest CT scan is highly
recommended for bilateral bullae or opposite site bulla detection
